BASEBALL

NOTES .AND COMMENTS. The Auckland Baseball League gave an exhibition at the Domain on Saturday in connection with the Belgian sports carnival, the spectators were interested in the game, and it should hejp considerably to further popularise this scientific American pastime. The league is forming another team, and persons interested are invited to join. It is hoped that the competition for the cup will be started within a fortnight. The Auckland team, thanks to C. MoLeod's pitching, turned the tables on the L.D.S. American team by 4 runs, the scores reading: Auckland 12, L.D.S. 8. C. McLeod, for the winners, was in good form, his pitching being the beat yet given. W. McLeod, catcher, was also good. He made no mistakes, and was instrumental in keeping the L.D.S. boys' score so low. W. Luckhurst, on first baso fi made one error, but otherwise his play was first-class, Thompson, second base, and Manson, third base, - were also m good form. J. Morris is improving in the outfield, and when he masters the base work ' will be hard to beat. Pennycook, at short stop, received applause for a catch which looked impossible. This player is among the best of the local men, and should be hard to leave out of the team to be picked to play Wellington. L Morris is another local player who outclassed himself on Saturday. He showed confidence, and his running between the bases was worthy of a much more experienced player. The L.D.S. team played well, but were unlucky on several occasions. Hancock took Comity's place as pitcher, owing to Comity over-reaching himself and performed very creditably. Chadwick. as catcher, was not up to form, his stopping being erratic. Kingston, on first base, was good.
