DECIDING A TIE.

COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTION.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—own correspondent.] Wfangaheij Monday. The rather unusual course of drawing from a hat was followed to-day by Mr. H. C. Hemphill, returning officer for Whangarei County, in connection -with the selection of a representative for Otonga Riding. This resulted in Mr. W. Hay being returned.

At the recent county election Mr. Hay was declared elected by the close margin of 47 votes to 46. When an official "recount was made it was found that one invalid vote had been credited to Mr. Hay in error, and that both candidates were equal. As is usual in such cases, the returning officer decided the result by lot.
