POLICE COURT NEWS.
**• A DANGEROUS CHARACTER. FALSE PRETENCES ALLEGED. " He is a dangerous character to be at large," said Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M., in reference to a Maori named Thomas Hopa, who was charged at the Police Court yesterday that on November 13, he obtained from James Pascoe a diamond ring, valued at £34 and £21 in cash, by means of a false pretence, namely, a valueless cheque for £55, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand at Rotorua, and purporting to be signed by A. E. Alexander. Chief-Detective McMahon said that the accused was on remand for a charge of false pretences and another of forgery. He had been released on bail in connection with the latter charge, and had immediately committed the offence for which he was now before the Court. The chief detective asked for a remand until the 20th
of the month, and requested His Worship to fix a substantial bail as the man was a nuisance to the community. Mr. Frazer fixed bail at £500, or two sureties of £250 each.
