A SMAET PASSAGE.
VOYAGE PROVES UNEVENTFUL. /
IriE Canadian-Australasian mail steamer Niagara arrived in the stream at Auckland at 1.30 p.m. yesterday. The liner came from Vancouver, via Victoria (8.C.), and reached port one day ahead of .contract time. She cleared the Canadian port at noon on October 27, and after making a call at Victoria, came on to Auckland direct, thus omitting the customary visits! to Honolulu and Suva. The voyage was' uneventful, and was accomplished in 19 days. The Niagara deviated from the usual course, and other precautions were I taken. Fine weather generally prevailed, throughout the passage. For the first time since the outbreak of war, the military authorities issued instructions for the detention of the Niagara before she entered port. The anchor was dropped close to the examining steamer a few minutes before noon. The Niagara was then boarded by several military officials. At 1 p.m. she was allowed to j proceed, and anchored .off the end of the Queen's Wharf hali-an-hour later. After medical and Customs inspections, the Niagara berthed at 3.30 p.m. The liner brought 387 passengers in the three classes. Of this number 147 landed at Auckland, and 240 are proceeding to Sydney to-day. The third-class passengers lor Australia include a large number of men, who are returning after a fruitless effort to obtain employment in Canada. The cargo brought by the Niagara for New Zealand amounts to 750 tons, and includes* the usual lines of Canadian merchanI disc. The principal items are 29,000 cases of fresh American and- Canadian apples for New Zealand and Australia, 100 cases of fresh pears, several hundred cases of tinned salmon, and a large shipment of ! news printing paper.
