MINING NEWS.

THAMES DEEP LEVELS. DISMANTLING THE PUMP. [BT TEIiEGKArHOWN COKSESPONDENT.J Thames, Saturday. The dismantling of the pump at tho Thames Hauraki shaft has been in progress during the week, and is now about completed. The draw lift has been lifted and cleaned, and everything made as secure as possible for the permanent stoppage of the pump, as decided on by the board. It is expected that all work in this connection will be finished on Monday, . and the remaining employees will be paid off. General surprise is expressed throughout the district at the attitude taken up by the various companies interested with respect to the stoppage of the pumps, for, if the pumps are stopped for any considerable time, the columns and other iron parts in the shaft will become so corroded, owing to the peculiar nature of the water, as to make it a very difficult and costly matter to start them again.

WAIOTAHI.

[by telegraph.— own correspondent.]

Thames; Saturday.

The work of securing the lower levels and shaft of the Waiotahi mine has been completed, and the mine has been closed down as far as the workings down below are concerned. At the Thames Hauraki shaft a start has been made to clean up the old battery at the mine, which should be a profitable undertaking, as it _ has been running on good ore for a considerable number of years, and has not previously been thoroughly cleaned up. A scheme for employing a limited number of men on the surface portion of the mine on prospecting and development work is also under consideration, and will probably be gone on with in the near future, so that the mine will not be totally closed down, as is the case with all the other mines on the flat.
