TARANAKI IRONSAND.
SMELTING EXPERIMENTS.
SUCCESSFUL RESULTS.
[BY TELEORiPH.—
New Plymouth, Friday. The result of the experiments which have been in progress for some time at Moturoa for the conversion of the ironsand from tho Taranaki beaches into pig-iron was seen today when the smelting furnace was topped. About a ton of molten iron flowed from the furnace. The process, which has been patented by Mr'. J. A. Reskett, of Melbourne, consists of mixing ironsand with coal breeze, then cooking the same in ovens. It is then placed in a blast furnace, where the breeze acts as a heating power. The demonstrations were "witnessed by several townspeople. Owing to the newness of the furnace the process of smelting took a longer time than will bo the case when the apparatus is in thorough working order. The patentee, who supervised the operations, states that he is confident of success, and that he expects to be able to produce a ton of iron per hour when the works are completely equipped.
