LAWN TENNIS.
NOTES AND COMMENTS. The rain last Saturday morales somewhat interfered with tho tennis in the afternoon, and, in consequence, tho attendance at the various courts was not as great as usual. Some of tho grounds were a little soft, and play was postponed until well on in the afternoon. 'The season is early yet, and ground superintendents ore reluctant to take any chances in the matter of gettins the courts cut up By the overi entnusiaßtio player. A little patience at this time of the yoar means a great dual before the end of the season. The entries , for the inter-club matches must be considered very satisfactory, 13 teams in all having entered for the competitions. In the matter of grading there was tho usual rivalry between tue Auckland, Onohunga, and Dcvouport Clubs for a position in the first grade. The association set over the difficulty 07 admitting, all three clubs, and it is generally considered the decision was a wisp one. The Dcvonport and Auckland Clubs have previously been represented in the first grade, but the honour is new to the Onehunga Club. Thereis no club in Auckland that can lean the . latter club in the matter of enthusiasm, and it has well earned its elevation to the first grade Tho Ouehunga, Club is tho only club with three teams in lha competition, and it is possible that it may create moro than ouo surprise before the season ends. 1 The first grade will comprise seven teams, making six matches for each team. Til* second grado has six teams, and the third, trade five teams. The Dominion Road Club is tho only club not represented out of the clubs that competed last year. Ou tlw other hand, Eden and Epsom, Mount Albert, and Northcote-Birhenhead have auoin entered teams. Tho United Christian Aesociotrn Club is a new club that has just affiliated with tho association, and this club' & ' entered a team in tho third crude. The West End Club ban decided .to depart from the usual method of playing i"J club's competitions by mutual consent throughout the season, and will this yea" try the experiment of playing the doubles - event off on tho one day. This event will be played on November 28, and with fill early start, and no delays good pros"" should bo made towards completing '-ho matches during the afternoon. If the scheme . works satisfactorily no doubt other competitions will be got off in the same. way. ■ ;-* Tho reduction of the croquet-playing, area at tho I'arnell Club's grounds, necessitate! .v by the great reduction of croquet members. . has been tho cause of the resignation or,-; nearly all tho croquet members. As a re- . sult, tho club's committee has decided Jo make tho club a purely tennis club, and tends to at once, convert tho. remaining croquet lawn into an additional tennis , court. This will givo tho club six gced courts, and, as tho membership of (he club .. is now, only 78, there are vacaucics for some 80 additional players. In-order to save the club the oxponso of providing prizes tui.c"' 0 competitions,, the following members 01 the committee havo donated trophies:— Professors ~ Segar and Egcrton> Messrs. J, P. Stevenson,. ■;..; 11. J.'. Coates,: G. 11. Baker ■&,' and A. A. •■ Martin.. '- '■•■. •."-•', ■. ,k;\- , '.- ■':■■ Ltxx. ,
