From tho respective lists published in another column it will be readily , recognised that tho number of entries re- . ceived in all cases is most satisfactory. The 1 number \of nominations received for tho respective- events is as follows:—Auckland j Cup, 45; : Railway Handicap, 46, Summer 1 Cup, 55; A.R.C. Handicap, 47; Islington ; Plate, 29; Auckland Plate, 28; Grandstand Handicap, 64. Tho weights for the . '/Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap are : fuo to make their appearance on Friday 1 next. •'.: ' • -Reputation having silenced the opposition .', in tho decision of the Canterbury ; Cup in oasy stylo the son of Martian must be . accounted to have completely wiped ■• out tho defeat which he suffered in the Derby run at Riccarton previously. Bal-boa,-who led the field home in the Derby, was amongst the starters for the Canterbuy Cup and from the fact that ho failed to get closer than a poor third, wo must, I suppose, conclude _ that a journey extending , to two miles and a-quarter 'is not to his liking, at least at this stage. Unfortunately "the official with the watch" was • not on hand to time the running of the Canterbury Cup, so that we are without the interesting information as to the rate at which Reputation compassed the 13 furlongs attaching to tho long distance I weight-for-age race. The winner of the C.J.C. Derby invariably follows up such a success by adding tho Canterbury Cup to his list of triumphs. Balboa's defeat in the Canterbury Cup, after winning the C.J.C. Derby, would, I doubt, not, lake some minds back to the spring of 1890, when Medallion and Crackshot were on the scene. Medallion won the Derby, but in the Canterbury . Cup Crackshot turned the tables on his chest- ■ nut rival. Later on at Kllerslio tho two colts in question were found contesting against each other. In the decision of tho Great Northern Derby, Medallion defeated Crackshot, and with the Auckland Plate run over a like distance on the following day, the form pointed strongly to Medallion as the possible winner of tho weight-for-age race; but, to the discomfiture of backers, Crackshot beat bis rival. The reversal of form in the Great Northern Derby and Auckland Plate as between Medallion and Crackshot occasioned quite a lot of talk at the time. It certainly was a pointed object lesson as to what may happen in racing* when everything rings perfectly true. The Geo. G. .Stead Memorial Civ?, wnich comes up for decision at Riccarton to-day, should be brimful of interest, as the following horses are engaged in the mile and a-quarter weight-for-ago race Autumnus 9.3, Rinaldo 9.0, Bonny Helen 8 9, Merry Roe 8.9. Warstcp 8.9, Balboa 7.12, Fabrifcoff 7.12, Reputation 7.12, First Flight 7.9, Indigo 7.9, In the event of the going being in a, favourable state wo may expect to learn when the result of the race comes' to hand that a very fast mile and aquarter has been entered up in the records. •Had YV>rstep got ,homo first in the Canterbury Cup it would have been tho first occasion since Cruciform triumphed in the spring of 1902 that a mare has scored in tho weight-for-ago race. In the old days the , mares ' were wont to play a strong part in the Canterbury Cup. .'Peeress won in two successive years, and Lurline followed The Peer's beautiful daughter by a similar feat. There has been an interval of no Jess than 23 years before Lady Zelland succeeded in increasing the mares' record in the Riccarton weight-for-age race. In a communication to the Herald during the present week the Rev. W. Beatty delicately, though at the same time pointedly, drew attention to the published fact regarding the financial success which had attended tho Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting; and no doubt like many others deemed it an appropriate occasion to draw attention to the claims of tho greatly-suffering Belgians. At the meeting of the A.R.C. committee on Thursday night it was decided to donate lOOgns to the Uyl'ian Fund! Everybody knows that tho A.R.C. beat every other club in the Dominion in the extent of contributions to the Patriotic Fund; but this call for the suffering Belgians is a. different matter, and many will, I do not doubt, estithe lOOgns voted by the A.R.C. as much below what could reasonably have been exnectcd. There is, however, plentv of time for the A.R.C. to vote another donation, and one of a more solid character, to tho Belgian Fund; and I hope that, soma committeeman will bo quick enough to riso to the occasion, and so prevent what could, in its present form, be cnsilv summed up as lack of generosity. Tho little fact we should all remember is that nothing too bo done for the Belgians, ,;. -It transpires tliat two sons of France own; the VR.C. Derby winner, Cavlila. In a comment on the blue riband the Australasia . says: — "Tho owners of Carlita-: race under the name of Messrs. 'Roger* and 'River.' They are Frenchmen, engaged in business in a. large way in Sydney, and Mr. ' Ro?er* has a valuable property in New Caledonia, where his uncle was ono of the original French settlers. , Immediately the present war started, Mr. ' River' set sail for Franco to join the colours, and he is now at tho seat of war. Ec will be cheered on receipt of the news, which was immediately cabled him by Mr 'Roger,' that their filly had won tho blue riband of the Victorian turf. Mr. ' Roger,' who saw the filly win on Saturday, was personally congratulated by. Their Excellencies tile GovernorGeneral and the Governor of New South Wales, who both expressed their delight that Frenchmen had carried off the classic event." : Jean lias been responsible for presenting the turf with two first-class cross- ; country performers in Capitol and Rod McGregor in bygone years, but it is doubtful if either of tlms'o mentioned gave as much promise as Scots Guard, who carried off the Hunters' Steeplechase at Ellerslio last Saturday. Scot's Guard, by Cuirassier—Jean, is one of the boldest looking hunters ever seen out at Ellerslio, and' lias plenty of size to recommend him. His fencing ability is undoubted, and as he won from 12 others last week over a threemile course when not near ready to do his best, it may be confidently predicted that the brown gelding will be seen figuring in a much more prominent light when : next winter's cross-country events come to be derided. It is to bo hoped that the Waikato hunter goes on safely during the intervening months. In the list of weirhts published yester- : day for tho Melroso Handicap, to' bo run at tho. Tnkapuna Spring Meeting, a mistake crept into the telegraphed message. All-weights below Coloraino should have i read 7st 71b instead of 7st 81b. '■ meeting,' Vthe ; Glcnoit .- Park stuilmaster, Mr. % Walters, be ,; came, entitled to the sum named, and witl ; a good generous spirit sent it along to thi % Belgian Fund. '.'-.. Colonel Soult will not .he in work long . enough to repeat his best when tho A.11.C. ' Summer Meeting happens along, but he ; is standing up to tho light work allotted him well, and certainly promises to stand a solid preparation. " Quito '.a lot of interest centres in« the . • decision of the Electric Plato at Riccarton, and this afternoon's contest promises to 3 be no exception. Records of the past go ' to show that good, two-year-olds have sur--5 vived when put seriously to tho test, so r' with • Battle Eve, Sutala, Desert Gold, J Gold Foil, and Sweet Corn figuring . amongst the acceptors the juveniles prof miso to be bard to dispose of. It is ~ noticeable that last year's victor, Downj ham, figures amongst tho list engaged. [ ( It is tho intention of the Auckland Rac- . ing Club to erect additional turnstiles L where most needed to accommodate the . crowds likely to ho present at tho ap- « proaching Christmas carnival, i ——— Persian Prince seems to have recovered from the rick he suffered from prior to the Ellcrsliu meeting. All the work now beino; executed by , racehorses at Ellerslie is in the left-handed direction in order to educate horses satisfactorily for Takapuna conditions. Lady Dot has arrived at Ellerslio from Ngaruavahia to undergo a preparation for . tho Takapuna meeting. ( _ The two-year-old relative to Cherubim , .in E. J. Rao's stable is all rijht again, and ' in constant work on the track at Ellerslie. Salvannie is now adorned with bandages as the result of his fall at Ellerslie last week « OTAHUIIU TROTTTNG CLUB'S SPRING MEETING.' Tho Otahuhu Trotting Club's spring carnival will be entered upon on Wcdnes- ; day next, when should the weather prove favourable, an interesting and successful meeting should result. Mr. F. D. Yonge, secretary, has everything in order for the ; convenience of racegoers, while the race track has never been in better order all round. The acceptances are highly satisfactory, and the ,Otahuhu Trotting 'Handicap, two miles, should provide a fine contest. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. NOMINATIONS FOR LEADING EVENTS.
