BRITISH AT SMYRNA NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE.
COLONY MAY BE SHELLED IF ALLIES ATTACK CITY. GOEBEN DAMAGED IN BOMBARDMENT OF DARDANELLES, (Received November 14, 12.30 a.m.) London, November 12. The Athens correspondent of the Morning Post states that the members of the British colony at Smyrna desired to leave, being doubtful of the assurances given by the American Consul that the lives and property of foreigners would be protected. They were not allowed to leave. Turkish cannon are in commanding positions on surrounding heights. It is believed that they will shell the colony if the allies attempt to take the city from the sea. A Petrograd message from Constantinople states that the Goeben is seriously damaged. A shot penetrated it on the waterline during the Anglo-French bombardment of the Dardanelles.
