THE PATRIOTIC LEAGUE.

PAY FOR DEPENDENTS.

THE FIELD AMBULANCE.

The executive of the Aurkland Patriotic League met yesterday, there being presents—Messrs. Geo, Elliot, in the chair. N. As Nathan, H. W. Hudson, N. J. Burner, E. A. Craig, Chas. Rhodes. Stanley Milroy, A. S. Bankart, Archibald Clark, and the Mayor, Mr. C. J. Parr. G.M.G.

The attention of the committee was called to a recent decision of the Arbitration Court in conncction with an application on behalf of the timber industry In tho Auckland district to approve of employees working shorter hours each day rather than leaving a mill idle altogether on certain days. The Court's decision was against the request, the employees also opposing it. The. secretary of the Timber Workers' Union stated that men engaged for only a few days a- week could easily obtain work elsewhere for the balance .of tho time. Consideration of matter was deferred. The general feeling of the committer was in favour of the proposed shortening of hours rather than shortening the number of working days. Correspondence was received from the Defence Department in response* to inquiries for a list of allottees of soldiers' pay. The Department stated that the number was so extensive as to render it much more desirable if the committee would indicate the individuals who complained that they had not received expected payments. The information desired is to be forwarded.

'i ho Auckland reinforcements now trainj ing at Trentham asked if they could be supplied with ciicket materials. A sum of £10 was granted, and Messrs. Elliot and Larncr undertook to enlist the sympathy- of firms supplying these goods. '1 ho Finan< o Committee recommended that the sum of £500 set aside some weeks I ago for the use of the field ambulance at the front should bo placed in the hands of the New Zealand War Contingent Association in London for that purpose, instead of appointing a special committeo as originally intended. The Wellington j Patriotic Fund authorities, who are malej ing a similar arrangement asked for inforj niation as to Auckland's intentions. The ; information will be supplied. j At the request of tho Relief Sub-oom-jniittee, the following motion was adopted: ! ■ "1 hat the hon. treasurers be authorised jto act upon, the requisition of the chairman for the time being of the' Relief Committee for payment to him (within the limits authorised) of funds placed 'at the disposal of the committee and the receipt of the. chairman for the time being and cf die member of the Relief Committee shall ibe a sufficient discharge ; it being understood that responsibility for the appiica- ' lion of such funds rests not with the hon. , treasurers but with the Relief Committee ' only.' 1
