FINED FOR DESERTION.
OFFICER WANTED TO FIGHT * LEAVE NOT ALLOWED. (Received November 7, 2 a.m.) Melbourne, November 6. Herbert Bateson, the fifth officer of the Osterley, who joined the petitionary force, was fined £l on* a charge of desertion. The prosecution stated that the Orient Company did not object to its officers fighting for the King provided that the mail service was not dislocated. Bateson said that he asked the captain's permission to enlist, offering to provide a substitute, but the captain declined permission.
