POPULATION TERRIFIED BY SCENES OF HORROR.
DARKNESS ONLY RELIEVED BY BURNING BUILDINGS STREETS REDUCED TO RUIN BY INCENDIARY SHELLS. f (Received October 11, 7.30 p.m.) Ghent, October 10. During Thursday shells constantly fell on Antwerp, including the Place Verte. Many places were set on fire, and whole streets were reduced to ruin by incendiary shells. A Zeppelin which dropped bombs on the Law Courts was hit. A diversion enabled the Germans to bring up fresh guns. The population was terrified by the continued scenes of horror and the darkness, which was only relieved by burning buildings and exploding shells. The Belgian Army gallantly made a sortie from the left bank of the Scheldt). General Deguise, the military governor of Antwerp, was a pupil of Brialmont, the designer of the Liege forts, and is the youngest and most brilliant Belgian general. He assisted in organising the defence of Adrianople when the Balkan war broke out.
