GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS.

! OPENING GAMES TO-DAY* MANY VISITING PLAYERS. THE WEEK'S PROGRAMME. The New Zealand golf championship meeting will be commenced at Middlemore links to-day under the management of the Auckland Golf Club, and will be continued throughout the week until Saturday, when the finals of the professionals' match and the amateur. championship will be played. The arrangements are complete, and all that is now necessary to make "golf week" a success is favourable weather conditions. The entries disclose an eminently satisfactory state of affairs, and augur well for many interesting contests during the week. The principal events have attracted good entries, a large contingent of visiting golfers having reinforced the local talent. The open phampionship has attracted an entry of 58, the amateur championship 51, and the professionals' match 13. The array of first-class golfers who are ; competing is imposing, many champions ! and ex-champions having entered. The open and amateur champions, E. S. Douglas, Wanganui, and B- B. Wood, Chrint- : both, arrived to usiend. ? their titles, and W. .lies' will defend the title of professional champion. The ; open championship bears an exceedingly interesting aspect, a number of the professionals especially appearing to have strong claims, notably E. S. Douglas, J. A. Clements, F. G. Hood, and W. lies, while of the amateurs B. B. Wood has been showing very fine form and A. D. S.Duncan, though, a late arrival, is rapidly familiarising himself with the local conditions. The course, which received special preparation, requires rain to bring ft to its best condition, but, though very fast, the greens play true. Owing to the difficulty of defining hazards the committee has decided that players may ground their clubs anywhere,.
