On the day in question, Donoghue and Hodgkins were at home, when a jeweller s traveller named James called. James was invited inside, and displayed his stock of jewellery. Donoghue purchased a watch and chain on the hire system, paying 5s deposit. When James came to pack up his stock, he discovered that five ladies' watches—three of silver and two of gold— and a piece of gold-mounted greenstone were misting. On taxing the two men with the theft of the jewellery, James was ordered out of the house. On his return to the city he placed the matter in the hands of the police.
Detective Gourley yesterday gathered information which led him to believe that Donoghue had disposed of the watches to different men in the streets. Donoghue was subsequently arrestffed, and lodged in the police cells. He will be charged with theft at the Police Court this morning. He detective was successful in recovering one gold and two silver watches, valued at £15.
