When James came to pack up his stock, he discovered that five ladies' watches—three of silver and two of gold— and a piece of gold-mounted greenstone were misting. On taxing the two men with the theft of the jewellery, James was ordered out of the house. On his return to the city he placed the matter in the hands of the police.
