THE AUCKLAND MEN.
GENERAL GODLEY'S VISIT. EXTENSIVE PROGRAMME. THE WORK IN THE CAMPS. Work is now proceeding smoothly at both the Otahuhu arid Devonport camps. At each camp cantons have been opened and shower-baths are available for the men. The troops are carrying oat their training steadily and are daily improving in efficiency. Throughout yesterday the men from the Gtahuhu camp were engaged in riflerractice at Penrose and some good shooting resulted. The maxim-gun section carriea out practice near Mount Richmond ana signallers kept up a line of communication between the camp and the various hills in the vicini'tv. At Devonport the men carried out some excellent field work.
The infantry battalion was engaged in tactical work during the day. The commandant of the expeditionary force, General Sir Alexander Godley. will arrive in Auckland by the Main Trunk express this morning for the purpose of inspecting the Auckland men. A programme in connection with the general's visit has been prepared •by the local Defence Office. As it has not yet been sub- : mitted to the commandant, it is subject to alteration. General Godley will leave at 9.30 a.m. for Orakei, where, at 10 a.m., he wili inspect the Infantry Battalion, which will engage in a tactical scheme, under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel A. Plugge. After the inspection, the general will either lunch in the field with Colonel Plugge, or will proceed to the Otahuhn camp, and have lunch with Colonel Mackesy. At 2 p.m. it is proposed that General Godley shall inspect the members of the 3rd, Auckland, and 11th, North Auckland, Squadrons at Otahuhu. The squadrons are to carry out field work between Otahuhu and Mangere. Returning to the city at 4.30 p.m.. General Godley will inspect other portions of the force, and will probably witness night-firing at the forts. The programme for to-morrow provides that General Godley shall leave Auckland at 9.30 a.m. for Devonport, and at 10 a.m. the 4th, Waikato, Squadron will be inspected while carrying oat tactical work. General Godley proposes to return to the South by the noon express tomorrow.
