EMDEN'S DEPREDATIONS. NO EFFECT ON WAR RATE. London, September 30. Despite the Eroden's depredations increasing the rates in the open market the war risk rate is still 40s per cent., compared with 42s quoted in the State Insurance Office.
The Emden's bottom is known to be very fowl, and it is considered that her evasion of the searching vessels is due to good fortune rather than to her speed.
JAPANESE CAPTURE COAL. BUT TAKE THE MONEY. Sydney, October 1. Passengers by the Japanese steamer Inaba Maru from Japan state that while they were held up at Manila several steamers left with , coal, apparently intended for the German warships, but were all capI tured soon after leaving neutral I waters by the Japanese.
The Japanese stated it was a clever ruse, declaring, "It is very good to sell them coal, get their money, and then wait for them outside and catch them."
BRITISH SHIP ESCAPES. WITH CRIPPLED ENGINES. Brisbane, October 1. The Cardiff-owned steamer Southport, of 35SS tons, reached port yesterday after being captured by the Germans. While the Southport was lying at the island of Kusale, in the Solomon Group, on August 14, the German gunboat Geier arrived and seized the cargo boat The British flag was hauled down and the German ensign hoisted. The crew were not molested. Portions of the machinery and the coal were removed in order to prevent her putting to sea.
On September 7 the Geier left hurriedly. The Southport's engineers set "to work and managed to fix the engines sufficiently to produce a slow speed. The ship secured a supply of native food and departed on the night of the 18th with lights out. An anxious time was spent with the crippled engines as the steamer slowly voyaged to Brisbane.
