TOWN LOST AND THEN REGAINED BY THE ENEMY. FREf>!CH CHARGE BY NIGHT THROUGH THE GERMAN LINES. (Received October 1. 12.30 a.m.) London. October 1. If was reported from Amiens on Sunday that the French retook Peronne en the 16th. Severe fighting followed until the 18th, when the French reached the outskirts of St, Quentin. The Germans, seeing their danger, hurried forward reinforcements and ordered that the ground lost must be regained at any cost. The cost was heavy, but the French wore slowly rolled westward. < m if; 23rd the Germans retreated from Peronne. The French concentrated heavy guns and drove out the Germans, who brought up further artillery and were able to recapture the town on the 26th. th** French doggedly fighting every inch. They found an effective nut hod of disturbing the enemy. Flying columns of heavy cavalry rode at night time through the German lines at full speed and charged through their bivouac, burning convoys and motor-cars and upsetting vu>t quantities of oil.
