Pabis, September 19. There was furious fighting on Thursday along the British section of the line. Some famous regiments suffered severely, but they performed their task unflinchingly, and occupied some advanced German positions at terrible cost.
The Germans occupy a prepared position, armed with heavy artillery, and consequently the allies' progress is slow, but their vigour and enthusiasm are unabated. They successfully repulsed a German counter-attack. The situation is generally unchanged, while the enemy continues to fortify its positions.
It is stated on reliable authority that in the past fortnight the German losses in killed, wounded, and prisoners averaged 3200 a day, or a total of 44,000, of whom 14,000 were killed.
