APPARATUS IN WELLINGTON.

ARREST OF A GERMAN

Wellington, Sunday. A man named Hugo Scwaldi was arrested by a detective to-day on a charge of establishing, in Wellington, an apparatus capauie of transmitting and receiving wireless signals without having obtained official permission to do so. It is stated that the plant was established in a house in Taran-iki Street. The police information is meagre, but it is understood that the man is a German, who has been naturalised in New Zealand. He is alleged to have purchased die plant yesterday, he states for experimental purposes. The plant is said to be capable of sending messages 25 miles during the dav, and under favourable conditions 100 miles, and of intercepting messages sent from the wireless station in Wellington or from warships in the harbour.
