London, September 15. A message from Rome states that the Russians' way is open to Buda Pesth and Vienna, because the fortifications on the Austrian frontier are badly manned and armed with antiquated guns. The Russians expect to reach Vienna in the middle of October. Advices from Petrograd state that the Russians have occupied Czernowitz, the capital of the province of Bukowina, on the eastern frontier of Hungary, without firing a shot. It is estimated that Russia holds 200,000 Austrian prisoners. It is also officially announced at Petrograd that the Russians have crossed the Lower San unopposed, and have occupied Grodek. They are now a day's march from Przemysl. News of the recent victories has caused tumultuous rejoicing in Petrograd. The audience at the Opera House sang national songs. The Ambassadors of the allies and Japan, in the boxes, bowed their acknowledgments. The Russian authorities have instructed all volunteers in the Far East to assemble at Harbin. A panic occurred in Vienna when 400,000 unemployed made a demonstration in the streets. The Germans claimed to have destroyed the Russian army in East Prussia.

Przemysl is a town in Galicia, Austria, 60 miles west of Lemberg. It it situated on the River San, and is one of the strongest fortresses in Galicia. Grodek is also in Galicia, and is situated 17 miles south-west of Lemberg. Bukovina is a duchy and crownland of Austria, bounded on the north by Russia and Roumania, on the south by Roumanian on the west by Transylvania and Hungary, and on the north by Galicia. Czernowitz is the capital of Bukovina, and is 420 miles east of Vienna and 164 miles south-east of Lemberg. Harbin is a town in Manchuria, on the River Snngari, and was an important military centre during the Russo-Japanese war.
