nil AVONDALE MEETING

Mi.i.iiM.s ii.-id under the auspices of the Avondale Jockey Club enjoy sir. h a strong popularity that it is really only a question of fine weather to bring about a. strong invasion of the western suburb when racing is in progress there. The inauguration of (lie season to-day by the A.•).(.'. gives every promise of being mosttitting. All round the acceptances are most satisfactory, and with a good prospect of a record held lining up at the post for the Avondale Cup. there is much In rivet attention on the principal event of the afternoon's sport. The Avondale Stakes being the initial contest of the season for the two-year-old division, that, of course, will serve to infuse a deal of interest into tho juvenile contest. The victory registered by Woorak in the Chelmsford Stakes, run at Randwick on Saturday last, must be viewed in the light of future brightening up his Derby prospects. At two years old Woorak clearly came out top of his class : but. while there was every recognition on all hands j of the great dash of pace on. the part of the son of Traquair, not a few keen judges ventured tho opinion that ho was more likely to earn distinction for speed rather than endurance. The distance of the Chelmsford Stakes extended to nine furlongs; and by winning over that journey Woorak has already gone some way to confound those critics who challenged his staying capacity. Woorak's next engagement is in the Rosehill Guineas, which event comes up for decision on Saturday next.

A LUCKY OWNER. Classic events continue to fall to Mr. .1. B. Joel's colours. The latest addition so be chronicled in that connection is the St. Leger, in which race his home-Dred colt Black Jester led the field home. At two years old Black Jester secured a place amongst the winning two-year-olds, but as he wound up unplaced in the Middle Park Plato it was held to bo clear that he was not up to high class. The fact that Black Jester defeated Kennynwre winner of the Two Thousand Guineas, in the St. Leger does not embrace much <>1 the meritorious order, and as the secondrate French colt in Durbar 11., which won the Derby, was missing at Doneaster, «e are left to conclude that the wav was weli paved for Black Jester to land'the classic race on the Town Moor last week

ENGLISH-BRED SIRE DEAD. The English sire. Downshire, which was purchased at the dispersal sale of Mr. J I). Reid's stud at Oamam in January 1912, by the New South Wales breeders' Messrs W. B. and C. L. Thompson, was not destined to have a long life j„ bis new home Advices to hand state that Downshire had the misfortune to be can in his box, and a broken back resulting, the friendly bullet had to be requisitioned Dow,,sh,re. who was a highly-bred horse by Ayrshire from the Orvieto marc Sea down, was foaled in 1904, so that lie was only m h,s 10th year at the time of W" death. '"*

LEAVES FROM MY NOTEBOOK. For horses to be signalled as double "inner* at Avondale on the same dav is a very frequent occurrence, and it is noticeable that Coldfirc figures in two events tins afternoon. The chestnut son of \Va.riki has lost none of his pace sine, he got on the."winning list at the Ellerslie June gathering, arid was responsible f or a good five fin-lungs the other morning with a K..ud weight in the saddle. Ho will he ridden by Scott in the Maid.,, Hand.; c.'P. and it (o'pends upon his. showing in that event whether or not he will' be saddled up to contest the Flving Hand,, cap. A win m the Maiden will necessitate a penalty of olb or the open event

Since the full brother to Colonel Soult Niltiinc. won the seven -furlong hack event at the hunt meeting last month, a. vc-rv k.-en eye has be*,, kept on 5tm,,,,',,./, .(large, at headquarters, and as he lias .'"lie on the right wav the shanelv little -i of Soult is likely to be a strong choice oi the Maiden Handicap at Avondale this irternoon. '[here is no doubt that he is -|i".'dy. but it is worthy of note that Steniung has another candidate engaged lold Necklet, wjlo has been :-howing°up •veil in her track work, and who" ha« dually finished in front of Soltane. in rack essays, though, of course, favoured :i: the matter of poundage on such occi- '""■ s tonning's pair will prabul.lv need t-- on the:,- best 1-. keep Coldlirc at'bav '

< ..;i!.|-.icu..n. amount 1,.,,! rirst-.-L-ii-s lhvco.yMr-t>l<ls who have failed to annex tii'- Avoudale Cup may he mentioned tlysian and .Morn- Rot, and on that y- • 'int Mulliugar's attempt this afternoon is creatine; marked interest. *J,> will strip is tit as hands '-an make him. but whether .11 will see out the 10 furlongs to the bitter end can only bo conjectured. He was responsible for a really smart six furlongs the other morning, and may find plenty of support on that account."

' King's Courier has not been overtaxed with work since ho showed a clean pair of heels to the fteld which lined up lor the juvenile parade, at the recent hunt, meeting, but it will only need a look at him this afternoon to satisfy sports-men that he is very forward for a two-year-old. He sprinted a nice half-mile last week-end, ;ind will probably start the public elect in the Avondale Stakes. Another candidate that is very forward is flokl Lac, who has been responsible for some smart work on the two-year-old track at 1 adrpiarters.

Master Lupin should be well served in the- matter of recent racing to fit him for ins Avondale Cup task this afternoon, for he was in action at both Marlon and Dannevirke. Ho finished second to Indigo over the right distance at the latter meeting, but will be opposed by a niiicli better class this afternoon. The distance may be beyond him. though he can be depended upon to make matters merry for alwut a mile, if set for that purpose.

Ihe disappointing two-year-old of last season, Harlj, is set to make Ins first three-year-old appearance in the Maiden Welter at Avondale to-day, and his showing should be decidedly interesting. Ho has done nothing at headquarters to merit his chances to be specially lauded, but is a good-looking customer, boasting of sonio breeding, and may make a name for himself with increasing age. ({littering Sands, Monatho], and Haku are three Kllerslie candidates that have been doinc nicely in their work at- headquarters. Haku is to Do ridden by L. Wilson. <

Royal Irish has been distinctly successful when competing at Avondale, and as he has been responsible for some smart work at Ellerslie of late weeks, he is likely to come in for a lot of attention this afternoon, when saddled up for the Cup. He has won over the distance in the past, and is a brilliant galloper when right. He irave Jolie Fille and Worcester a couple of lengths over a six furlongs brush yesterday morning, and finished up nicely in front on the sand track, though lie may have had a little tho best- of the poundage.

With the exception of Crotvn Pearl, the public would be set a hard task to find a favourite in the Flying Stakes at Avondale to-day. The presence of the Southerner gets over the difficulty, ami nothing else is seriously considered by keen followers of the turf, though it is a fact that Crown Pearl is decidedly unlucky and usually finds a place only in this class of event.

All soils of rumours -were afloat on Monday relating to the breakdown of Merry Roe. but these were set at rest yesterday morning by her appearance on the Ellerslie track, though it was noticeable her task was a light one on the tan track. It is said tho stable may rely on Bleriot to attempt to annex the Cup at Avondale to-dav.

Bleriot promises to start favourite for tho Avondale Cup this afternoon. She has twice won over the distance at the suburban course, winning the Cup two years ago and the Avondale Handicap the following autumn with 8.9, when she was timed to run 2.8. which stands as the track record in these events.

Soultikoff is looking and moving particularly well of late, and held Tragedy King and Prince Soult safe during an effort on the tan track yesterday morning. Soultikoff will have the services of Emerson this afternoon, but may have to declare a few pounds overweight to obtain that horseman.

B. Deeley has an exceptionally good record in connection with Avondale Stakes winners, the Auckland light-weight having steered no less than rive previous candidates first past the post. On that account his mount this afternoon will come in for a lot of attention.

Some of the riders in the Avondale Stakes this afternoon will be: King's Courier (J. Conquest), Gold Lac (J. O'Shea), Lady of Lourdes (B. Deeley), Sea Dc'il (J. Buchanan), Worley the Knut i.C. Browne), Lady Phyllis (Robinson).

Some of the likely horsemen to bo seen engaged in the Avondale Cup are : — Bleriot (J. Buchanan). Royal Irish (J. O'Shea), Worcester (R. E. Brown), Bluestone (Stockley), Jolie Eille (Gilchrist), Tact (C. Brown), Mullingar (Deeley), Master Lupin (\V. Bell), Soultikoff (Emerson), Kaween (Warner), King Soult (L. Brown), Lady Elgiva (Robinson).

Admiral Soult is set to meet a very moderate field in the hurdles at Avondale this afternoon, and with Deerey in tho saddle, he is likely to be heavily supported on the machine. One of the candidates showing marked improvement of late in his work is Revelation.

Since Crown Pearl arrived at- Avondale, A. Oliver has been across at the suburban course riding him in his work. This Flying Handicap candidate promises to be very strongly supported this afternoon, which is only feasible after his recent second to the brilliant Clynelish at Riccarton over the same distance. Crown Pearl is to be ridden by A. Oliver this afternoon, which horseman mil also 6teer Royal Arms in the Islington Handicap.

Should Bluestone go to the post for the Avondale Handicap, it is said Stockley will he found in the saddle. The grey gelding has not been indulging in very strong, long work of late, and, maybe, his party will prefer to start him in' the seven furlong Henderson Handicap.

A couple of inaccuracies have crept into the official cart! connected with to-day's racing at Avondale. In the Av>ndale Cup Royal Irish's weight appears as Bst 51h. instead of Bst 31b, and in the Flying Stakes 9st 81b is down against the name of Crown Pearl, instead of 9st.

Master Lupin, who arrived from the South on Saturday, in charge of J. Coylo. was seen out at EUerslie yesterday morning over sever, furlongs, but the time was not good. The wrung way round may affect the bay.

. The committee of the Avondale Jockey Club has extended a cordial invitation to their .spring meeting to the members of the expeditionary force, and they will be admitted free to all parts of the course.

There is no doubt about Bleriot being very well just at present, and she showed up veil in a. sprint with Casta Ila and La Reina on the tan yesterday morning, arriving home first on the outside of the trio.

Most of the work at Ellerslie lias been o: the sprinting order during the week, and one gallop yesterday over half-a-mile is worthy of note, that of Tripoli and Kitty Bellairs. which pair made good time.

Monajack has been working particularly well of late at Ellerslie, and will surprise track-watchers should he fail to make, a formidable, showing in the Henderson Handicap this afternoon at Avondale.

Indulgence broke down on Monday morning, while being exercised on the tail track at Ellerslie, a ligament being badly sprained. It- may mean her retirement from the turf for all time.

Tinopai. a cand'dfte for the Flying ii dicap at Avondale this afternoon, is said to have, shaped particularly well in an essay at Avondale the other morning.

Bonny has arrived from the South, and will bo ridden by A. %Shaw in the Mount Albert Steeplechase on Saturdar at Avondale.

Vestal has been responsible for some good work at EUerslie of late, and will be a starter in the steeplechase at Avondale on Saturday.

Kanrn'i is to be ridden hv ,1. O'Connell ii: the hurdles at Avondale to-day, and Rungitnnu by H. Futcher.

Worcester is an Avordalo Cut. candidate who lias had a particularly solid preparation during the winter month*.

There was verv .little schooling work by iencers at Ellerslie yesterday morning.

Royal Arms is spoken of as an unlikely starter in the Avondale Cup.
