FIFTY YEARS AGO.

WEST COAST DIGGINGS.

SUPPOSED EL DORADO.

(From the Hebald of September 16. 1854.) By the steamer Nelson, which left Nelson; a short time back, 45 diggers took their departure for the Grey, either to try their fortunes at the Hohono or some other part of the West Coast. Newspapers sometimes get blamed for painting in too glowing colours the success of individual at new diggings, thereby causing a rush which is foDowed by disappointment. No charge of this nature can be brought against any journal for encouraging a rush to Grey, yet with little or no inS formation regarding the country, or the success which has attended those who have prospected there, party after party leave for this supposed El Dorado, bv every opportunity that offers. But we presume the Grey is not the sole attraction to diggers who arrive in Nelson, for we see men daily with " swags " on their backs, leaving town for the Uppev ' Buller. There, at least, we know that ] steady industry gets well recompensed, 1 and '.f there are no great finde every digger there can make a living.
