Sergeant Loftus, in a letter from the front, says When the British artillery opened, the Germans replied. They did not know 01 the shelter trick we learned from the Boers- The German infantry came along in solid, square blocks, standing out sharply agaiD*=t the skyline. We could not help hitting them. The Germans rushed like, mad at our trenches. Some of the British continued, the volley, but crack shots indulged in independent firing, another trick learned from | the Boers, Finally we mowed down the Germans, with bullet and j bayonet."
