ANOTHER DESCRIPTION OF GERM DISPOSITIONS.
OBSTACLES WHICH STAND IN THEIR WAY. (Received Auguet 30, 5.5 p.m.) '.■••■ / London, August 29. The Germans arc now advancing from Longuy in four columns. Their first objective is the gap of Stenay, twelve miles west of Longuy, where they hope to strike the Mouse and accomplish a turning movement against Verdun. The Monlmedy fortresses and the deep valleys of the Meuse should make possible a French counter on this army. . A second army is striking between Montrnedy and Mezicrcs, despite the forests which the French occupy there and the small fort of Charlemont perched on i rock 700 ft high. ...
Stenay is 25 miles north-west of the fortress of Verdun, and about 30 miles souh-east of Mezieres. Both Mezieres and Verdun are strong fortresses. In all there are about 16 large furls round Verdun, and about 20 smaller works, the perimeter of the whole being about 30 miles and the greatest diameter of the fort ring, nine miles. Montrnedy is a second-class fortress about eight miles east of Stenay and 15 miles west of Longuy.
