(Received Aueust 28, 12.50 a.m.)
London, August 27. Particulars of the fighting between the British forces and tho Germans aro now becoming available. A description of Sunday's battle between tho two armies states that the shooting of tho English artillery was magnificent, but thero was not enough of i •. in comparison with the enemy's. The shells of tho allies burst withe it fail, but tho Germans, who found the range smartly, failed to rah :o their shells burst, while they frequently fell short. The Germans bombarded tho cntrenched Berkshires for 24 hours, bui there were very few British casualties. A German aeroplane came too close to tho gunners, who brought it down when it was 2000 ft up. Three miles north of the canal there were two clumps of forest about, fiivo miles in depth- Tho Germans advanced from Oharleroi through wooded country north-west of Moris, and from higher ground the British could follow the whole of tho German movements. When tho German forces emerged from tho forests into the plain, the British artillery opened a devastating fire upon them, which was fi'.liu rt by rifle tiro from the trenches when the enemy camo within rango. Thousands of Germans fell, and the German forces mado no progress up to nightfall on Sunday. Their dead and wounded wero scattered over, the hills between the canal and the forest. Tho British loss was small. Tho play of German searchlights throughout the night was uncanny, and it accompanied by occasional artillery fire. The fighting was resumed with violence at daybreak when tho Germans wero heavily reinforced.
