MONEY AND PRODUCE RATES.

Tiie following are the Bank of England returns for tho week ended August 26: — Coin, £42,743,000; reserve, £26,352,000; proportion of reserve to liabilities, 17.83 per cent.; notes in circulation, £35,571,000; public deposits, £23,887,000; other deposits, £123,893,000; Government securities, £29,779,000; other securities, £100,905,000. MONEY MARKET. Short loans, 3 per cent, Three months' bills, 5} per cent. PRICES OP METALS. Pig iron, 51s. SUGAR. loreign granulated sugar, spot, 29s 6d. BUTTER. I.'he market is quiet. There are fair arrivals of Dutch and Irish butter and a few of Australian. Australian salted, 116s to 1245; unsaJted, 118s to 1265; Danish, 128s to 1325; New Zealand, nominal, 120s to 126 a. CHEESE. Tlio market is quiet. A few New Zealand consignments have been offered and sold. Coloured, 70s; white, 725; Danish, 80s to 84s. A few Australian lots were sold at from 72s to 765. WHEAT Wheat is firm. There is a 6harp American advance. Sellers are asking more, but the d<-"iand is inactive. Australian, landed, 45a. FLOUR. Flour is firm. Australian, store, 345. OATS. Oats aro slow of sale. New Zealand Gartons. afloat, 295. PEAS AND BEANS. Peas and beans are flat, and nominally unchanged.

The following were tho Bank of England returns for the week ended August 3.9:—Coin, £37,188,000; reserve, £19,223,000, porportion of reserve to liabilities, 15.80 per cent.; notes in circulation, £37,186,000; public deposits, £13,674,000; other deposits, £107,094,000; Government securities, £26,041,000; other securities, £94,726,000. A comparison of the figures showc increases for the week just closed as against the week ended August 12 as follows: — Coin, £5,555,000; reserve, £7,129,000; notos in circulation, £1,615,000 (decrease); public deposits £10,213,000; other doposits, £19,187,000; Government securities, £3,738,000; other securities, £14,179,000.

FRUIT AND PRODUCE MARKET. A fair amount of business has gono through the fruit and produce market during the week, more especially in tho earlier part of tho week when Tasmanian and Sydney fruit was offered. Prices wore without change, but local apples improved yesterday. Mandarins were more plentiful ana Island oranges are still on the market.

LocaHumons aro in much larger supply and prices are easier. The potato market is still short of supplied and high prices are being obtained. Fresh arrivals are due on Monday by the Victoria, to be followed on Tuesday by tho Waitemata. These two shipments will relievo tho market to somo extent, but will not very materially reduce values. Onions are short and best samples aro selling well. Fresh eggs wero offered in large quantities at late rates. Farmers' butter was in light supply. Poultry }s selling extremely well. FIELD PRODUCE. At a meeting, of Kempthorne, Prosser, and Co.'s board of directors, held to-day, tho usual interim dividend of 7 per cent, per annum was declared, GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET. [bt telegrafh.—press association.] Christchurch, Friday. Thero is nothing fresh to report in connection with the wheat, market. Any business taking place is between merchant and merchant or merchant ajid miller, as there are no sellers at present among growers. Oats are very firm but little can bo done in export trade even if tho Homo were favourable, as there is no freight available. In view of tho number of vessels shortly to arrive in the Dominion this difficulty should soon bo overcome. For A grade oats up to 2s 4d at country stations ba« boon p/iid. Oatsheaf chaff is firmer, prime quality now being worth £3 and f.a.q. £2 10s at country stations. Potatoes are easier as supplies cannot be Rot away to Auckland and £2 is fell that is now being paid at country stations. PROPERTY SALES. At tho auction salo held yestorday by Messrs. Samuel Vailo and Sons, Ltd., the property in Cross Street, Newton, having a frontage of 117 ft, with three cottages erected' on it, was passed in at £925. but was subsequently sold for £950. A house in Crammer Road, which was also passed in, was told privately for £725. A cottage of threo rooms, on a quarter-acro, at Swanson, was passed in at £110. There was a good attendance at tho salo, and buyers bid freely.
