FRENCH STRONGLY ESTABLISHED IN ALSACE.

FORCE OF HALF-A-MILLION MASSED IN WEST AND SOUTH

GERMANS RETREAT ALONG PATH OF DESTRUCTION. (Received August 17, 1.6 a.m.) Paris, August 16. It is estimated that half-a-raillion French troops are massed in Alsace. Strong forces hold all the passes from the west as far as those leading down to Colmar, while tho southern lino spreads across tho country south to MuDiausen. The Germans arc concentrated around and south of Colmar. There have already been slight artillery duels, in which the Germans have been the most active.

The French have had the best of numerous outpost encounters. The Germans have burnt many farms in their retreat from

advanced positions.
