"GOING TOO FAR."

A FRIEND OF THE MOTORIST. [BT TELEGRAM!.—SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Friday. A great number of the subjects dealt with at tho Municipal Conference yesterday were concerned with motor-cars. Every man's vote 6eonwd to be against them. It was nronosed to tax tiiem, to tax petrol, to renew their registrations each year, and a variety of other restrictive remits were introduced. During the discussion of a Lower Hutt proposal for annual registration a member sarcastically suggested, "Let us give every motor-car owner six months' gaol and be done with it." Later on in the discussion tho motor-car found a friend in Mr. R. T. Michaels, of Auckland. "Lower Hutt has motor-cats on the brain," he said, and in the name of Auckland he protested against the stand that was being taken against the motoi'car owner. There were undoubtedly "road hogs," but the Lower Hutt proposals were going too far. This attitude was generally applauded bv members > and a remit from Lower Hutt seeking to make registered owners responsible for penalties imposed on drivers was rejected.
