The Hobart Golf Company's links have been sold privately for £25,000. The property is at Sandy Bay, and comprises 109 acres. The company entered into negotiations with the municipality of Queenborough, formerly ft suburb of Hobart, for the sale of the links for £20,000, with a proviso that golfers should have the right to use the finks for 15 years on certain conditions. When the Queenborough municipality became part of the City of Hobart, an offer to sell the links for £25,000 was made to the Hobart Council, and it was made known that private purchasers were prepared to pay that sum for the property. The council considered the amount too high, and offered £20,000, which was refused. The council next offered to split tho difference, and made an offer of £22,500, subject to ratification by a poll of the ratepayers, and to sanction being given by Parliament, but the company sold it privately for £25,000. The popularity of golf is evidenced by the fact that the Miramar Club has now a roll of nearly 400 playing members and a fair number of honorary members. It is doubtful if there are many other clubs in the Dominion with such a large number of playing members. As the tenure of the links at Miramar is terminable at any time, the committee of the club has formulated a scheme for the purchase of about 103 acres of tho Crawford estate, near tho city boundary. The area includes practically the whole of the land on which the first 13 holes aro now played, with the exception of about two chains of frontage; also an area of 30 acres of flat land to the south and east of tho present links, and about three acres fronting the tramline, near the city boundary. The committee is satisfied that a first-class fu.l-length course can be laid out on this land, at a moderate expenditure. The coarse would comprise 12 of the present holes, and six new ones, and would bo one of the best and longest in New Zealand. A clubhouse' built on modern lines forms part of the scheme that the committee will shortly place before the members. If the purchase of the land is effected, golf could be played at Miramar throughout the whole year, instead of being confined to the winter months, as at present.
