The following are the Bank of England returns for the week ending July 16: — Coin, £38,458,000; reserve, £29,189,000; proportion of reserve to liabilities, 52.28 per cent.; notes in circulation, £29,315,000 ; public deposits, £13,319,000; other doposits, £42,486,000; Government securities, £11,005,000; other securities, £33,623,000. MONEY MARKETS. Bank rate, 3 per cent. Short loans, 1\ per cent. Three months' bills, 2£ per cent. Paris bank rate, 2i per cent. Berlin bank rate, 2 1 . per cent. CONSOLS AND COLONIAL STOCKS. Consols, £75 12s 6d. Now South Wales 4 per cents., £101. PRICES OF METALS. Bar silver is quoted at 2s lid per standard ounce. Copper, £61 Is 3d to £61 lis 3d ; electrolytic, £63 7s 6d. Tin, £143 15s to £145 ss. Lead, £19 2s 6d. Spelter, £21 6s 3d. Pig-iron, 51s 4id. SUGAR. German beet, 9s 4d ; first marks, lis 6d. WHEAT. The downward tendency continues, owing to the excellence of tho American winter crop, and despite the unfavourable Continental reports. English conditions favour a good and early harvest. Australian cargoes are' quieter, and sellers are holding. Australian, on spot, is nominally worth 37s 6d. FLOUR. Little business is doing. On spot, it is worth 24s 9d to 25s 6d. Sellers are holding firmlv. OATS. The market is quiet ; 21s c.i.f. is asked and 20s offered for A grade Gartons, a July shipment. BEANS AND PEAS. Little business is doing. New Zealand July shipments are worth about 33s c.i.f. Peas aro firm, 52s c.i.f. bv-ng paid for first New Zealand Maples, on the passage to Avonmouth. BUTTER. The markot is firmer. Danish 128s 6d. There is better inquiry for colonial. Australian choicest salted 110s, some 112s; fino, 106s to 108s; choicest unsalted, 112s, some 114s; fine, 108s to 110s. New Zealand, unsalted, 114s to 116s.

CHEESE. White, 65s to 65s 6d; coloured, 63s to 645.

At the London wool sales yesterday the following prices were realised for the fleece portions of the New Zealand clips named: Okare, top IOJd, average lOJd; G.P.D., top 13id, overage 12|d; JO. top 15Jd, average 12gd; Otamata, top 14d, average 13|d ; Sqvorne, top 16d, average 13jjd; St. Oban's, 'top I6id ; average 12Jd.

FRUIT AND PRODUCE MARKET. Business in the fruit and produce market during the week has been very dull. Shipments of fruit, particularly locally-grown, have fallen off. Consignments from Sydney landed in poor condition. Only prime dessert apples are commanding attention. Cooking varieties are 6carce and inquired for. Dessert pears are also scarce. Poorman oranges are to hand in larger quantities '.nd selling well. Lemons are short. Passions and tree tomatoes are almost finished. Hobart apples are expected on Monday and will have a weakening effect on local stockt. The potato market still continues _ in over supply and values are easier. Prime onions are scarce. The market is full of poor-conditioned from the South. Kumaras aro selling well and pumpkins are a drug. Swedes and horse carrots are plentiful. Fresh eggs were in good supply at late rates. Farmers' butter remains the same. FIELD PRODUCE. Potatoes: Prime Southern, £5; local, 2s to 2s 6(1 per cwt.. Onions: Local, prime, 6s 6d nor cwt: Southern, soft, So 66" per cwt. Tuikoy hens, each, 3s to 5s 3d PROPERTY SALES. Two properties were submitted for tale yesterday by Messrs. Samuel Vaile "and Sons, Limited, at their auction rooms. There was a good attendance and bidding was brisk. A sixroomed bungalow in Ascot Avenue, on a section 50ft by 250 ft was offered, completely furnished. Bidding started at £800 and the property was finally di«nosed of at £1065 . By order of tlie registrar of the Supreme Court, a section with a frontago, of 107 links with a depth of ?08 l ; nkfl and containing a shon and the old Remuera Hall, was sold for £1000. The Home and Colonial Stores have purebred a three-storey brick and concrete building, situated in Newton Road, which will be used as their distributing depot for their numerous branches. The sale was conducted by Messrs, Walker and Coakley, auctioneers, High Street. CANTERBURY GRAIN MARKET. [by TELEGRAPH.— association.] CnnisTcnußCH, Friday. No business is being transacted in the grain market. The large quantity of Australian flour coming into the Dominion is keeping the wheat market very quiet. Potatoes are practically unsaleable for the time being as no fresh business is coming to hand from the North. A fair quantity is on sale, but buyers aro holding off .and are 'riot even making'low offers. The price is nominally £210s per ton at country sta-

tions. A fairly large quantity of out-sheaf chaff is on offer, but as there is no outlet there is but limited demand. The price now being offered is £2 5s at country stations. BROKEN HILL DEBENTURES.
