SCHOOL APPOINTMENTS.
THE NORTHCOTE CASE.
At last night's meeting of the Northcote School Ccommittee, it was resolved to send full particulars of the recent appointment of infant mistress to tho Minister for Education, and strongly urge that an amendment be made to the Education Act conferring greater powers on school committees in connection with tho appointment of school teachers. It was also decided to request Mr. A. Harris, M.P., to support tho committee's action. The chairman said that though the school committee had sent a copy of all the correspondence to the Teachers' Institute, that body had not had even the courtesy to acknowledge the committee's letter. He understood that though a meeting of the institute had been held, and a considerable number of teachers were keenly interested in the caso, the matter had not been brought before the meeting, but had been dealt with in a "hole-and-corner" manner by the executive, which appeared to be a "poace-at-any-pricE" body. A letter was read from the Education Board stating that it could not see its way to accede to the request of the committee to cancel the appointment.
