ATHLETICS.

AUCKLAND HARRIERS. Tho weekly ran of the Auckland Harriers Club will be held from the Domain to-day, starting at 2.45 p.m. COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIPS. A proposal is on foot to establish an inter-college and secondary school athletic championship in New Zealand. The council of the N.Z.A.A.A. is endeavouring to arrange such a championship in tho South Island, and it is hoped that a South Island meeting will be held this year. Mr A. A. Marryatt, president of the council of tho N.Z.A.A.A., who. has been ,in Auckland during the past few days, lias interviewed several authorities, with tho idea of obtaining their assistance in establishing a championship in Auckland, but so far the proposal has not met with success. However, Mr. Marryatt was assured that if a New Zealand inter-college and secondary schools' championship meeting was decided upon and held in some central place, Auckland secondary schools and colleges would be represented. The reason why the proposal has been mooted is to keep the boys in the colleges more closely in touch with the sport, so as to ensure their active participation and interest in athletics after they have left school.' This, it is contended, would also increase the public interest in the sport. Athletic championships are now held in connection with the primary schools in each of the centres of the Dominion, and there is every prospect that these will he permanent fixtures. In regard to the secondary schools idea, it was intended, in the first instance, to havo a championship confined to the secondary schools of the Auckland Province, Auckland being' so far distant from Wellington. When tho scheme had developed a New Zealand championship meeting would be established.
