DEVONPORT WORKS.

— ♦ - A CONSULTING ENGINEER. A long discussion took place at a special meeting of the Devonport Borough Council last evening on the question as to whether a resident or consulting engineer should bo appointed to the borough. All the members of the council were present. Mr. D. W. McLean moved that the following resolution passed at a special meetin? of the councd, held on June 16, be rescindea: —"That a new position be created, that of resident borough engineer to the borough, the officer holding the position to have full charge of the whole works department of the borough; his duties to include a complete scheme of reorganisation of the works department, and to draw up and carry out the scheme of road construction proposed to bo entered upon bv the council. Applications to be invited for the position in each of the four large centres, and a salary of £500 per annum to be offered."

Mr. McLean, in moving the motion, advanced several reasons why a consulting engineer should be appointed instead of a resident engineer. Mr, A. G. Quartley seconded tho motion.

After considerable discussion tho motion was earned by six votes to ..'our, those voting in favour being Messrs. McLean, Quartlev, J.. K. Hartv, A. N.xcm, J. C. Webster, and the Mayor (Mr. W. Handley), and those against Messrs. A. M. Pickford. J. Henderson, A. Llovd. and P. N. McCallum.

Further discussion then took place on tho question of appointing a consulting engineer. Eventually, on the motion of Messrs McLean and Quartley, the following resolution wiis —"That aeonsulting engineer be engaged to draw up and report upon the scheme of road construction proposed to be entered upon by the council, and to prepare a report on the working of the works department of the council. Applications for the position to be invited on the conditions to be drawn up by the council,"
