DETAILS OF THE SCHEME.

CONDITIONS OF SERVICE. (KT TZISGRJJ-B — CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Monday. Tin: Minister for Defence, the Hon. Jas. Alien, informed a reporter to-day that H.M.S. Philomel would bo taken over probably on July 14 or 15 and that the naval adviser (Capt. Hall Thompson) was si present hard at work upon the details of too naval training schemo and the regulations. These, the Minister stated, would probably be completed about the nine the training-ship was taken over or soon afterwards, and the Government would then be in a position to consider applications from recruits for naval training.

The number erf men to be enlisted has not vet been officially determined, but it has been estimated that the training-ship can » commodate from 60 to 80 men. The conditions of service in the New Zealand naval forces are only broadly laid down is the Naval Defence Act of last year. It is specified that enlistment shall be voluntary and that the minimum, period of enlistment shall be two years. Persons under the age of 21 years may enlist with tie written consent of their parents and guardians, but in no case for Buch a period as would bind them after attaining the age of 30 years. .Members of the New Zealand naval forces may be transferred for or training to any ship of the Ring's navy or of tho navy of any part of the British Dominions. On completion of their service members of the New Zealand force will be transferred to the New Zealand naval re«rve for service only in time of Wir. Ail such details as the period of service and rate of pay have still to bo determin?d by the Government with the advice of its naval adviser.
