LAWS OF THE GAME. BOTH FEET ON THE MAT.

A letter, which doals with the question of keeping both feet on tho mat when delivering a bowl, has been forwarded by Mr. Sidney E. Lamb for publication. Mr. Lamb writes as follows:— the annual meeting of tho Auckland centre of tho Dominion Bowling Association, to bo held this evening, tho delegates arc to ho asked to vote a? to the advisability of onforcing an old law of the Auckland Provincial Bowling Association, viz., ' That players must havo both feet on the mat when delivering a bowl.' This law was made is 1908, I believe, and waß framed vilh tho idea of making our local laws harmonise with those of the Commonwealth, It must be plain to everybody that such a law is obnoxious to Auckland bowlers, because it has been a dead leticr over since. Hotorua made an effort to onforce it for two years, and then droppod it. Now the old idoa of obtaining uniformity in the laws of the two colonies is being resuscitated. Do bowlers realise what is happening? Our neighbours in Australia havo introduced two points of difl'orenco in tho old Scottish laws: 1 Tho jack is not dead when it goes over tho side lines. 2.' Bowlers must keep two foot on the mat. Now they wish to compromise with us, by discarding No. 1 themselves, and by getting us to adopt No. 2. This is distinctly humorous. However, beforo we adopt such an alteration we Bhould ask ourselves if any benefit is likely to accrue to bowling generally, more especially as such a law is distasteful to local bowlers, as is evidenced by a similar law becoming inoperative as soon as it was passed. In any case, why this unseemly haste on tho part of the Auckland oiecutive in attempting to pass such a law without giving the clubs a chance to vote on it? Our delegates will not know tho wishes of their club members; and, in such an important alteration of the laws, they should not be placed in such a position, neither should tho great body of bowlers bo disfranchised, finally does it matter in the least if tho Australian laws differ somewhat from ours considering how rarely we meet one another? Why not apply the old majim: 'When in Rome do as Romans do?' "
