AMENDMENT DEFEATED. MAJORITY OF THIRTY-EIGHT. SECOND READING CARRIED. DISPUTE IN IRISH PARTY. By Telegraph—Press Association— (Received Juno 26. 10.10 p.m.) London, June fS. A defence of Mr. Lloyd George's finance proposals was made in the House of Commons last night by the Premier, Mr. Asquith. He admitted, however, that tho time had como for a full inquiry into the system on which tho income tax was levied, the law at present being a ghastly confusion of chaotic provisions. Mr. Bonar Law taunted Mr. Lloyd George with surrendering his millionaire supporters. Ho denounced the Chancellor's methods of finance, stating that he had broken every principle which past Liberal financiers regarded as essential. The amendment to the Bill moved by Mr. Hayes Fisher (Unionist M.P. for Fulham), regretting that it did not provide relief for local authorities, was negatived by 303 votes to 265. The.Labour members and several liberals abstained from voting. The O'Briemtes and Sit Luke White (Liberal member f-r tbc BuckTOse- division of Yon 'hire) voted wiih the Opposition. The Bill was read a second timeAfrer the division, as the members were leaving the House, the Nationalists taunted the O Brienitea. A heated altercation followed, and blows were threatened, when Mr. William Redmond intervened aDd restored peace.
