The famous Braes of Balquhiddcr and the valley in which Loch Voif and Loch Dome are eituated are threatened with destruction by a scheme for increasing tho water supply of Glasgow. Several persons have written to the Times remonstrating against this proposed vandalism in a district made sacred by the genius of Scott and Wordsworth. Thero are other sources of supply that could 10 tapped without sacrificing the beautiful sconery of this part of Scotland.
The lato Duke of Argyll was an author, an historian, and a poet, and a considerable number of volumes stand to his credit in the British Museum Library catalogue. His talented father was also a writer of books, chiefly on scientific subjects and against evolution. One of the late Duko's earliest works was on " Imperial Federation," a subject that appears likely to come prominently forward after the lapse of a whole generation since it was first seriously discussed.
Professor Sumichrast. of Harvard University, gave a testimonial to the modern novel"that was happily qualified, though if, instead of "often' he had said "sometimes," he would perhaps have been nearer tho mark. "The modern novel," be said,
often gives admirable and sorious studies of aspects of life requiring diffcront treatment to different nations." Thus, American readers will not tolerate long descriptions, but insist on the rush of action from th© first. Nor will they stand the keen analysis of tho French novelist. But both British and American readers, he holds, admire the strenuous life,
The claim is put forward for Har^rave L. Adams' "Woman and Crime" (T. Werner Laurie, London) that it is tho Bret work devoted exclusively to the female criminal. Those, who wish to study the part played by women in crime, will find it fully traversed in this work, together with full details of tho more famous crimes committed or abetted by the sex, The work piles up a heavy indictment, against the sex of murder and fraud, besides lesser crimes.
