NEEDS OF THE DISTRICT.

COUNCIL TAKING ACTION.

A special meeting of the Takapuna Borougk Council was held last evening for the purpose of formulating comprehensive schemes for (a) road-making, (b) drainage, and (d) water reticulation system, and to consider the sites. offered for Council Chambers. There were present: The Mayor (Mr. W. Blomfield), and Messrs. E. C. Grimwado, J. Collins, A. Brett, F, E. : N. Gaudin, R. S. H. Biss, A. R Warnock and Dr; : Fullerton. . ,

The Mayor said that there was not the slightest doubt that the sooner the council considered the question of a permanent roading scheme the better. A lengthy dis-cussion-took place as to how the work of drainage, road formation, and water reticulation should be done, and finally it was decided to ask the consulting engineer (Mr. Lockie Gannon) to furnish comprehensive schemes, together with estimates. As a poll upon the'~question of acquiring land for the purpose of a park has to be taken before July 19, and as the question of placing council chambers upon a 'portion' of the park section had arisen.it was thoueht desirable to deoide at onco upon a council chamber site so as to enable the necessary public notice to be. given. Dr. Fullerton moved that the consent of the ratenayers be obtained to the purchase of the nark site, and in the event of the proposal' accepted by the public that a portion of the site be set aside for council chambers, , fire brigade station, and others offices. 'The motion was seconded by Mr. Gaudin. After a long informal discission, during which other sites were mentioned. Mr. ' Wnrnork moved as an amendment, that section 97,. Byron Avenue. of an area of 62ft bv 132 ft. be acquired at a cost of £5 per foot.
