HARBOUR IMPROVEMENTS.
In spite of the laudations conferred upon Australian systems of harbour management by Mr. Gunson, there will be very little disposition on the part of Auckland to meddle with the New Zealand methods which have worked, on the average, so well. A 3 everybody knows, Sydney was until recent years quite the worst equipped port of its size and standing in the British world. Long before Auckland is of the mercantile importance of Sydney it should be able to teach the authorities of that port much in the way of effective management and development. The latest of the periodical visits of inspection by Harbour Board members to the various works in hand fully justifies preference for our own system. The entire waterfront is being steadily moulded to its designed uses; although so much has already been done within a short time the public will be further impressed by changes and improvements in Quay Street and Mechanics' Bay, by new City Market and Fish -Market at Hobson Street, by a new slipway at Freeman's Bay, and other 'completed work. This steady and Well-planned work would have been hopelessly impossible if we had relied for it upon governments whose engineering horizons were bounded by Otira tunnels, and who actually thought they were duplicating between Auckland and Penrose, while they left a single line to Parnell. For progressive work, sound financing, and capable administration, the port of Auckland owes much to its Harbour Board, not the least admirable of whose members is Mr. Gunson himself.
