TODAY'S CELEBRATIONS. REVIEW IN THE DOMAIN. .
To day is tho 49 th anniverwij' . of the. birthday of King' George V., and will beobserved as a general '.holiday throughout the: British Empire: -In the' city -'themajority of. the business 'establishments jwillbe closed, as well as the Stock' Exchange, the various banks, ami-the > insurance 'and legal offices. - THere \yill be a .number of attractions, in and around the city. All railway .fares will, be at excursion rites, while, in. order, toy cope with the anticipated heavy rush of travellers along the Main' Trunk, ; an extra express will leave Auckland this evening at four minutes past ten o'clock. In honoufr of the occasion itself, a short review of . local territorials and senior cadets will be held the Domain Cricket Ground at, 9 a.m., weather permitting, and a Royal salute of 21 guns will, be fired by the A Battery, Field Artillery, in the Outer Domain. All veterans are requested to attend in plain clothes, with medals.
■■' Should lie weather be so 'unfavourable that the authorities decide .to abandon the review, the Royal saluto will be fired at 7.30 ajm., and this will also be taken as a signal that the paradfc has been cancelled. Similar reviews will bp hel,d .in the various country .centres,, 4? r The King's"' Empire Veterans aTe to .parade in full dress at 11.30 a.m. au the Defence Office for. the' purpose of saluting the flag and being inspected by the officer commanding the district, after' winch they will march, to the Town Hall, when lunch will be provided. The customary i.lute to the (lag will be made by the/assembled school children at the various schools. The Auckland Racing Club opens its winter meeting to-day at Ellerslie, and this will bo continued on Saturday and.. Monday. The chief event to-day will be the Groat Northern Hurdle Race. A sports carnival and seven-a-side tournament will be held under the auspices ot the Auckland Hockey Association on the Polo Club's grounds at Remuera, commencing at 10.30 a.m., and an interesting programme has been arranged. Tea will bn provided on the ground at one o'clock,, j arid again at three. Bowling tournaments j are -to be held on several of the local greens, and an Association football match between a.Hamilton representative team and tho. Thistle Club's senior team will bo played this afternoon on Victoria Park. The Auckland Golf Club is conducting a tournament on the Middlomore links for the A. M. Myers trophy. This evening there will be a large gathering of Bands of Hope in th| Town Hall,' which will be presided over by Dr. Florence Keller.
, The telegraph offices in the city will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and from 7 p.m. to midnight. The telephone exchange will be open as usual.
