CONAN DOYLE'S OPINION. Times and Sydney Sun Services. New York, Juno' 1. Yesterday, Sir A. Oonan Doylo visited Sing Sing Prison, America's largest convict establishment. He condemns American prison methods. CHARGES BY THE PRESS. The United States ' press is beginning to say some very unpleasant things about Sing "Sing prison. Rich prisoners, by payment of money ranging from £10 .upwards, are said* to have been ablo to secure immunity • from stone-breaking, wood-chopping, and other forms of rough labour. The New ") York World a year ago formulated charges of bribery against a former prison physician, who resigned. Corruption, pays this journal, of a petty kind is known in almost every penal institution, but th'at it' should exist on a scalo' of such magnitude in Sing Sing was a great surprise to 'the' State officials. It was alleged that the prison doctor placed favourite prisoners' in hospital to secure their exemption from work,, and! this plan was said to have been systematised to all . extraordinary• degree. Sing Sing waa_ one 5 of the establishments visited by "Mrs, Maybrick in her tour of American prisons, and was described by her as a mode}; institution.'..'
