In the canteen scandal cases yesterday, Colonel Whitaker and Archi- . baldMinto (head of the naval and ( military department in the' Lipton , firm) pleaded guilty. ; Colonel Whitaker's defence was that no favour was shown to the : Lipton firm,: and the only moneys : received were in compensation for his visit to Crete. ; The defendant ; read a letter from Colonel Fiennes, representing a firm of Maidstone ; brewers, offering him a free trip, and asking him to use his influence with the colonel in Crete on behalf of their beer. Appeal for Mercy. ' Mr. Justice Darling, in summing up, said it was regrettable that Colonel Fiennes, now Lord Sayc and Selo, whose ancestor put his hand to Magna Charta, should have written such a letter. Colonel Whitaker, in broken accents, said ho was not aware that he was doing wrong. He did it because of his need of money, having two sons at Sandhurst. He threw himself on the Judge's mercy. Mr. : Justice Darling, animadverting on the letter, sternly commented on the decadence shown by the representative of a great family in cadging orders for beer. Colonel Whitaker Removed. ■ Colonel Whitaker was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, while the other military offenders were bound over. Minto .' and Cansfield were fined £500 each, Craig £100, and Laing, Owen, Pegley, and Lynch. £50. Swain was bound over.
