NEW ZEALAND UNION.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE.

METHOD OF SELECTION CRITICISED

[BY TELEGRAPH.—press ASSOCIATION.] ( Wemington, Thursday. The annual conference of the New Zoaland Rugby Union was held to-day, the presiuom, Mr. G. H. Mason (Canterbury) oeing in tne chair. The following delegates were in attendance:—Auckland, Messrs. G. H. Dixon and M. J. Slieahan; Poverty Bay, Messrs. JU. vVylie, bulge, M. Naismith; South Auckland, Messrs. H. K. .bush and J. it. A. jUiughton; .Bay of Plenty, Messrs. D. Weir, and i'arata; Bush districts, Messrs. M. W. While and Scott; Tarftnaki, Messrs. .1. McLeod and M. J. Crombie; Wanganui, Messrs. Pownall and A. Laurenson; Alanawatu, Messrs. Jacobs and Gngley; iiorowhenua, Mr. W. Monoghan; Wairarapa, Messrs. C. Keid and A. E. Book; Wellington, Messrs. E. O. Hales. Little, G. Home, J. 11. Lynskey, and J. T. King; Nelson, Messrs. N. Galbraith, Vercoo, and Akers; Marlborough. Messrs. Griffiths and O'Sullivan; Buller, Mossrs. D. J. Williams and H. F. Cutler; West Coast, Mr. W. Perry; Canterbury, Messrs. G. H. Mason, C. Buchanan, A. L. Jones, S. F. Wilson, and F. G. Wnlburton; South Canterbury, Messrs. 11. Amos, W. Drake. H. H. Fraser; Otago, Messrs. Harris, Wilson, Isaacs, Torrance, and P. P. K. Macassey; Southland, Messrs. A. Dorbio, G. W. Woods, and C. G. Wilson; Hawko's Bay, Father Mahoncy and Messrs. K. F. Bailey and A. E. Niclson. In moving the adoption of tho report and balance-sheet (a precis of which has already been published), the chairman said that the past .year had been an ordinary one in certain directions, and an extraordinary year in other directions. The union had the pleasure' of reviving annual matches between Australia and New Zealand. Any trouble which oxisted between these two bodies had boon settled, and they were now on the way to very pleasant interchange of visits. A good understanding had been arrived at, and he was sure that the advent of the Australian team last year had been'productive of a great amount of good. So far as the Californian tour was concerned, ho was sure that it had done a great deal of good for Rugby in America, and the lour was a fine advertisement for New Zealand. Messrs. D. Weir and Little took exception to the manner in which representative teams were chosen. The question of selection, said Mr. Little, was treated in a haphazard manner. Players were not getting .justice. He suggested that a selector should be appointed for (he North Island and ono for tho South Island, and that each selector should choose a team for the island for which ho acted. Both selectors should then meet at the North v. South Island match and pick the New Zealand team. Mr. R. M. Isaacs admitted that the pro sent method of selection was not as good as it might be, but it was the best tho union was able to provide under existing conditions. Mr. J. Neilson, on behalf of Hawke's Bay, said that his union had authorised him to invite the New Zealand selectors to witness the Hawko's Bay-Wairarapa match, to be played on Juno 3. Tim expenses would bo homo by some public-spirited men. Hawke's, Bay would then be assured that the selectors would know what Hawke's Bay players were like. Mr. E. Wylie said that the great difficulty was that (hero were too many small unions. These should amalgamate, and so be able to have sirens: teams for big matches. That, he felt sure, was the best way of getting rid of the inconsistencies that at present characterised the selection. The report nml balance-sheet were adopted. Tho following officers wero elected for the current year :—Patron, His Excellency the Governor; president, Mr. J. Arneil (Auckland); vice-presidents, Messrs. A. E. Devine (Auckland), T. Clarkin (South Auckland), W. B. Miller (Poverty Bay). W. T. Parata (Bay of Plenty). W. J. Palmer (bush district), F. T. Bellringer (Taranaki), G. Sprig-gins (Wanganui), J. F. Manning (Manawatu), J. Rose (Horowhenua). D. K. Logan (Wairarapa), G. F. C. Campbell (Wellington), R. W. Styles (Nelson), J. Lord (Marlborough), J. Coivin I Duller), J. F. Wilson (West Const). G. H. Mason (Canterbury), A. Shirtcliffe (South Canterbury), H. Harris (Otago), I. Jenkins (Southland), and Frank Logan (Hawko's Bay); lion, treasurer, Mr. E. Wylie; Management Committee, Messrs. W. Parry, N. Oalbrnith, J. H. A. Laughton, G. 11. Dixon. M. Isaacs, G. Laurenson. 1. Hvams; auditor, Mr. O. G. Kcmber; representative on the English Rugby Union, Mr. C. O. Wray Palliser. It war, decided that the Appeal Council be located at Wellington, and tho following were elected its members:—Messrs. V. R. Meredith, M. J. Crombie, and A. Campbell. The. next inter-island match is to be played at Wellington on a date to be arranged later. A deputation from the New Zealand Referees' Association asked that affiliated Rugby unions be instructed to alter their by-laws, if necessary, so that the appointment of referees for club competitions be Ifeft in the hands of the local referees' association. After somo discussion, it was decided lhat the New Zealand Union could not interfere with affiliated unions in the management of local affairs. Mr. Woods (Southland) moved that the want for the encouragement of school football be increased from £200 (the amount voted last year) to £250. After some disMis3ioii an amendment, moved by Mr Wylio (Poverty Bay), that the grant be £200, as before, was carried.
