INTER-STATE SHIPPING.
NEW STEAMERS ORDERED.
A shipbuilding programme lias been entered upon by the Huddart-Parker Company, Ltd., in order to meet the growing demands of the inter-State trade. Three now steamers are being, or will be, built to enter into the company's service*.
One of the new steamers will, be fitted with turbines and is expected to attain, a speed of 20 knots. The vessel is nowbeing built at Messrs. Denny's yards, at Dumbarton, and it will be up-to-date in every respect. Special accommodation will be arranged for passengers. This steamer is intended for the mail and passenger service between Melbourne and Launce6ton, and it will run in conjunction with the Loongana.
A modem cargo steamer of 6000 tons, for the inter-State coal trade, has been ordered. The vessel is in course of construction at the yards of the Blyth Shipbuilding Company, and will bo fitted with the latest equipment for the rapid handling of cargo.
The third steamer will be of 3300 tons, and is designed for the Australian coastal trade. She also will bo fitted with the latest cargo-working appliances. The three steamers will be valuable acquisitions to the company's fleet.
