HEAVY FALL OF RAIN.
REPORTS FROM SOUTH AUCKLAND.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] I | Rotori'A, Monday. JHeavt rain commenced to fall on Saturday, and it continued during Saturday, but it ceased in the evening. Early on I j Sunday morning a regular deluge came | 'down,'but it abated at 11 a.m.. when tho ! sun shone again. The result of Sunday's rain was that many of the footpaths were temporarily flooded through tho channels becoming blocked. In the Government Gardens the bowling greens and croquet lawns were under water, and the fish-pond overflowed. At Whakarowarewa the footpath was covered with water for some time, and the small hot lake near the spout bath overflowed and caused some inconvonionco in the bath building. The record of the rainfall kept by the local meteorological observer shows that 3.6 in of rain fell. Wiiakatane, Monday. The heaviest rainfall experienced here, for many years occurred on Saturday evening. It continued throughout the night and until mid-day yesterday. The rivers are all in flood, and the low-lying lands under water. The rain, which was accompanied with a strong south-east gale, did a &ood deal of damage, many sheds and • outbuildings being damaged. Very heavy thunder, with .excessive lightning, was 'experienced yesterday morning. The weather' has now cleared again. Exceptionally heavy rains, accompanied by much thunder and lightning have been experienced. Some of the streets, the gasworks, and one or two cellars were flooded.
