DEEPENING WAIKATO RIVER

DRAINAGE OF SWAMP LANDS.

A proposal to raise a loan of £6000 will shortly be submitted to the' ratepayers within its area by the Waika'to River Board. The most important portion- of the scheme for the improvement of the Waikato -River is the construction oi groynes between the heads and tho wharf at Kaitangata, and in order, to continue this work the board' has made a request to the Minister for Lands, for a subsidy of £2 for £1 upon the proposed loan. ', ■

In response to a request mado by the board to the Minister for Lands, the Commissioner of Crown' Lands (Mr. H. M. Skeet) will leave the city on Monday to inspect the Whangamarino lands, particularly the private properties that have been. drained recently, with a view to'recommending areas to be opened for settle ment and to report upon the drainage of the large area -of 6\vamp ■ lands' between "Whangamarino and Te Kauwhata.: A proposal has been adopted by the board that its area should be divided,- and that each subdivision' should undertake the drainage of swamp lands, within''its area. It has already authorised ' the Pokeno' subdivision to , borrow . £500, and the Whangape ' division has' asked the commissioner to make a report upon its district.
