"THE NATIONAL HONOUR."
ATTACK ON THE BILL.
(Received March 16, 12.45 a.m.) > Washington, March 14,
Representative Knowland, in opposing a favourable report on the Bill repealing the exemption of the United States from the Panama Canal tolls, asserted that the Bill gave notice to the world that the United States had abandoned the policy of an American-controlled canal, and had surrendered the power to control its commerce, because of the peace-at-any-price policy. Mr. Knowland asserted that thousands of patriotic Americans considered that America was abjectly surrendering the national honour.
A large section of the press is agitating against the Bill, particularly in districts where the Irish and German voters are predominant.
