THAMES DEEP LEVELSDIFFICULTY WITH GAS. [by TELEGRAPH.OWN' correspondent.] Thames, Saturday. Considerable difficulty is being experienced in dealing with the large volume of gas which has accumulated in the deep level workings during the stoppage of the pumps. Efforts have been i;. do during the week to clear the gas from the 1000 ft level, but although all the known methods have been adopted they have proved unsuccessful so far. The manager. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] Thames. Saturday. Weil: in the Saxon mine is now being |iu.Mied forward more vigorously, and the I vnious quartz bodies intersected in the j crosscut at the Xo. 7 level are being driven on and developed. The last lode intersection, which was supposed to be the No. 2 Cardigan, lias been driven on both east and west from the crosscut for a distance of 2711. In both faces the reef shows a thickness of 18in. and looks promising, being encased in a good class of sandstone country, and carrying good minerals. At present, the lode is only l being stripped and left standing to break •down later The No. 1 lode is .being | driven on eastward only, the drive being I now in a distance of 24ft. This lode is at [Zesent of unalkv size, owing to the ! country in which it is encased being of a i mure slidy nature. The quartz broken, | however, continues to look well, and is carrying good mineral indications. The ! drive on the 4in leader is being continued eastward from the crosscut, and, is now in | a distance of 15ft. The quartz broken still looks well, and has shown colours of gold for the whole distance driven. WAIOTAHI. Good progress is now being made with the work of sinking the main shaft to connect with the 1000 ft level in the Waiotahi mine, the distance sunk for the past fortnight being 29ft. making the total depth from the surface 806 ft. This leaves a further 124 ft to sink to connect with the j top of the rise from the 1000 ft level. The country at the bottom continues to be of a good description, and is now free from water. MOANATAIARI. The work in progress in the Moana- I taiari mine is that of driving on the two leaders passed through in j the crosscut along the footwall of the main slide at No. 3 level. So far a total distance of 50ft has been driven, between the two leaders, both of which ! are being taken out on the drive. They ! are now heading more towards one an- | other, and have closed in, being at present! only about 4ft apart, and likely to form I a junction a short distance ahead. From present appearances the left hand leader is about 15in in thickness, and the righthand about Bin. They are encased in good country, and showing good mineral indications. _______________ _ . i WAIHI REEFS. j (by telegraph.own correspondent.] j Waihi, Sunday.
