MACKAY CUP.
WON OUTRIGHT BY RAWENE.
One of the yachting events of the year was held on Saturday afternoon when the competition for the Mackay Cup was decided. All the best yachts of the harbour competed in the race, which was run over the Devonport Yacht Club's harbour course. The weather was brilliantly fine, though there was hardly enougn wind for a keen race. The event attracted great interest, and was watched by hundreds from the shore, while tha ferry steamer which followed the raco was crowded.
The result of the race was a victory for the Rawene which won by 30s from the Thistle, while the W'aione was third, and by virtue of her win, the Rawene now becomes the absolute possessor of the cup.
Following were the competitors and handicaps:— lorangi scratch, Rawene om 30s, Ida Bm, Victory 11m, Marangi 12m, Waiot e 13m, Kotiri 14m 30s, Ngatira 14m 3tJs, Anrc-re 20m, Thistle 24m, Gloriana 28m, Vic, a 30m. Wairiki 32m.
The Wairiki and Gloriana were over eight minutes late in starting. The finishing times for the leading yachts were as follows: — Rawene 5h 27m 40s. lorangi 5h 31m 40s Waior.e 5h 40m 20s, Ida 5h 40m 435, Victory 5h 41m 12s, Thistle ?h 46m 40s. On corrected times Rawene is first, Thistle second, and Waione third.
