THE LABOUR MARKET.

DEPARTMENTAL REVIEW.

' [by telegraph.—own CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Friday. Dealing with the conditions of employment and trade for the month of February, the Labour Journal has the following to say concerning Auckland :—

As predicted in last report, an improvement in the building trades took place during the month. Bricklaying, which, last month was decidedly cfuiet. brightened up, and the prospects in the trade are good. Painters and stonemasons are experiencing rather a dull time, and as far as can be ascertained, no immediate improvement is anticipated. Those engaged in the boot manu|acture industry are well pleased with. the trade, but the opinion is expressed that trade will quieten; down next month, on account of the large stocks of imported boots which retailers will be offering for sale at low prices, in/ order to clear out their stocks.

Retail traders, generally speaking, are well pleased with the business done, particularly those who carry on purely cash trades. On the other hand, complaints are made by those using the\redit system that money is tight. Notwithstanding this, most of the firms are optimistic.

The unskilled labour market is unsatisfactory, as far as placing men in the city is concerned. Callers seeking employment have been numerous, most of them, being single men, who are disclined to leave the city, preferring to remain in the hope of something suitable turning up.
